Walungkura Napanangka
Walangkura Napanangka was born c.1946 at Tjiturulnga west of Kintore. She is the daughter of Inyuwa Nampitjinpa and Tutuma Tjapangati and sister of Pirrmangka Napanangka. Her family moved to Haasts Bluff in 1956 with a group of Pintupi people, then in 1981 the family returned to Kintore. Walangkura’s career commenced when she participated in the Kintore-Haasts Bluff canvas project ‘Minyma Tjukurrpa’ in 1995. She began painting for the Papunya Tula Artists in 1996.
Her paintings depict the journey of Old Woman Kutunggka, who travelled from the west from Malparingya, located north-west of Kintore, Northern Territory. She visited Tjintjikjin, where there is a special woman’s underground cave, depicting this sacred cave site and the Ngutan and Yarangu soakages. After travelling past Kintore the old woman travelled east to Muruntji, located south-west of Mount Liebig. She paints the rock country, represented by the textured circles and the sandhill country that is represented by the sinuous lines.
